I drew the design for this quilt a few years ago. Then I started drawing the quilting designs while I watched the Kia’i protect Mauna Kea by using their bodies to block the transport of machines that would have started the installation of The Thirty Meter Telescope, known as TMT. I fully support their position 1-I believe the university and DLNR have broken their agreement with the Hawaiians multiple times and 2- I believe TMT will be obsolete before it is completed. Also Natives lands should be in and be overseen by natives. So as you can see the images permeated my brain and leaked out all over my quilt. I am really happy with how it turned out, but I do feel like It am walking on the edge of cultural appropriation.
