My Bonsai Moon quilt is finished—unless I decide to add some paint. Either way here it is all fancy with its binding and blocked flat.

scrappy start and tablecloth progress

I have started a fun new quilt —a disappearing bento box pattern—in order to use up some of my scrap pile. It will have 16, 12 inch squares when I am finished. I am still trying to ease in all the fullness on the antique table cloth I am quilting. Not for the feint of heart!! And I am learning to live with a few distortions and puckers. Trying to hold the puckers back, and not stitch my fingers!

Currently Working On:

This is a heavy project. The lace edged table cloth was given to me by my Aunt. It belonged to my Grandparents and maybe even her grandparents. I definitely don’t want to screw it up. The yellow center square of the shadow background is made from my Grandfather’s signature yellow shirts. It took me quite a long time to find a color to go with it and I’m very happy with the gray. They both show off the embroidery nicely without over powering it. I’ve gotten it marked and am stitching on the trapunto for areas in the center and large open area inside the border embroidery. The big glass table James made was absolutely perfect for marking!! My hero. I’ve added the trapunto and pinned the tablecloth to the top.....and loaded it on the frame. I made my first stitches on it today. There is sooo much fullness to ease. Quite slow going at this point. But I’m happy with the 40 weight white cotton thread I chose and am looking forward to how good it will look fully quilted.

Opulence Quilts

One of my favorite fabric lines ever is Paula Nadelstern’s Madam Butterfly from the Opulence Collection. Many of my quilts have used and been inspired by this fabric in the years since it’s release This large quilt, 94” x 94”, uses the last large piece I had. Tropical Vacation 2018 Here’s the back and some close ups: After making the top of this quilt I put together a smaller one using the scraps and leftovers and named it Remnants of Opulence. I quilted this smaller one first to test my thread choices and make sure the batting I was planning on using didn’t have any issues.
